When City last played at this level, a phone was for calling someone and VAR was three letters looking for a meaning.

Now every match is a global broadcast event, every incident becomes content and every supporter carries a newsroom, replay screen and statistics department in their pocket.

Fixture reality

Your Saturday will move

The fixture list is only the opening draft. Roughly five matches per round are normally selected for live UK television, so Friday nights, Saturday lunchtimes, Sundays and Mondays become part of the routine.

Book trains and hotels with one eye on the broadcast-selection dates. A 3pm Saturday kick-off can be a temporary arrangement.

Celebrate—then glance at the referee. VAR checks goals, penalties, straight red cards and mistaken identity. Semi-automated offside technology helps position the lines faster, but the pause is still part of the spectacle.

VAR aims to correct clear and obvious errors in four areas. For 2026/27, the League says the high bar for intervention remains, with a focus on reducing delays.
